Photo of the Month . . .

"Glowing Pittsburgh"
Although I generate
images digitally 85% of the time now, perhaps at
heart I am still a die-hard photographer who
uses slide film (positive transparencies). Since
the late 50’s I’ve been using Kodachrome films;
for the younger generation Kodachrome was an
exclusive film developed only by Kodak Labs that
produced warm tones and very low film grain.
With the dawn and virtually total immersion of
digital photography Kodachrome is no longer
available. However to this day I continue to
develop most Ektachromes, Agfachromes and
Fujichromes in my own darkroom (A room void of
much light which was the Photoshop of its day.
This month, I have
chosen to showcase “Glowing Pittsburgh” which
was taken with Fujichrome Velvia Slide film (ASA
50), using my Nikon F4s and ED AF Micro Nikkor
70-180mm Lenses.
It was a late summer
afternoon on July 7, 2011 while visiting family
in Pittsburgh, Pa. when I saw a storm
approaching the city. Though many miles away, I
knew exactly where I wanted to position myself
capture this moment. This meant that I had to
navigate through traffic in a complete rush if I
was to succeed. Even though I made in time, it
was now beginning to downpour.
Undaunted I set up my
camera on my Gitzo Tripod G315, and as if mother
nature wanted to reward me, an opening ray of
light shone through the darkened sky which now
highlighted the waters of the three rivers.
Nature’s orchestral splendor was all coming
together. The waters now visibly agitated by the
strong winds, while the ray of light diffused
and surrounded this spectacular city. Now in
full compliance of a dazzling sunset's warm
light, nature’s stormy transformation provided
the instant impact.
Memorable images have
significant meaning especially when a glow of
light becomes magic. After all, regardless of
the type of film in an analog camera or memory
card in a digital camera; what is important is
the final outcome. Due to the very nature of
slide film, I wish to emphasize that images such
as this photo of the month cannot be manipulated
as in Photoshop, therefore, it’s an authentic
presentation!
Photographically
speaking, slides and digital images,
respectively do provide the same meaning when we
look at the image quality of light. Photography
in fact is an ancient Greek word which means
“Light tracing, as in sketching with light or,
the art to practice and producing images upon
sensitive liquid chemistry or metallic media
card’s surface via size HD CMOS Sensors, in both
cases it’s a reaction of light as radiant
energy.”
